As my first project for FiveCore Media, I had the privilege of working on the new promotional piece for the Athletics Department. As a former Goshen College baseball player, working on the project was especially important for me. I have appreciation for the new vision that the Athletics Department is trying to realize, and it was cool to be a part of bringing that vision to life.
I joined the project in August. At that point, FiveCore had already shot over a dozen interviews as well as game footage from all winter and spring sports. After I joined, we shot a couple more interviews as well as game footage from all fall sports. All told, we had 19 interviews and over 4,000 clips of B-Roll. Trying to condense all of these fantastic clips into a five minute video was a challenge.
I learned a lot during this project. This was the first time that I have edited a video in a team. Jared Zook and I were never in the editing room at the same time, so effective communication became critical. Working with Jared also challenged me to be better and to think critically about every edit that I was making. I could no longer make cuts simply because I felt like it; I had to analyze if and why this new cut would enhance the story.
I also learned about the technical processes of working with a larger project. I learned about the importance of maintaining a clean and
well organized project. I learned about the need to properly label everything. I also learned to use the color correcting software DaVinci Resolve. In the past, my ability to work with color had been handicapped by available software, so it was an amazing experience to finally work with a powerful tool like DaVinci Resolve. Working with DaVinci opened up my mind to different possibilities of how to manipulate images to advance the story.
It is with mixed feelings that I say goodbye to this project. I am going to miss the excitement of cutting together sports highlights, but I am also extremely proud of the video that we have produced. I am excited for the Goshen Community to see our video, and I hope that this video will prove to be a valuable recruiting tool for the athletic department.
