Goshen’s Urban Forest: A learning experience

One of the major projects I’ve worked on this summer with FiveCore Media is a video campaign for the Goshen Tree Board, called Goshen’s Urban Forest. The Goshen Urban Forest video series is a series of four videos that talk about the benefits of Goshen’s trees.  The four videos each cover a different category of benefit that trees have on our lives: Ecological, Aesthetic, Social, and Economical.  This project was proposed after the Goshen Tree Board finished inventorying all of the trees in Goshen located in an urban setting.  These four videos are a byproduct of their research.

I must say the production of these videos has been quite the journey.  If it wasn’t for the nine long interviews our editing would probably be a lot simpler, but condensing is going to be our best friend in the post-production phase.  Amidst the interviews, we have had a joyous time filming the Kendall family laughing and playing beneath the gorgeous trees of Goshen.  Their adorable two-year-old daughter Poppy Dee has given us something else to smile about other than the simple beauty of the trees.

One of the things I have most enjoyed about working on the Goshen Urban Forest project is simply how much I have learned about trees in the process.  I am discovering just how beneficial trees really are to our community and I now am inspired so that when I move into a house, if there aren’t trees there already, I hope to plant at least two or three.

The actual process of the videos is moving along quite nicely.  We have developed a good rough edit for each of the different ways trees benefit Goshen, and now we are thinking of different ways to make these videos more creative than the typical A-roll/B-roll style.  Overall, though it is difficult at times, it has been a joy to edit and work on these videos and I’m excited to see what they look like when they’re finished.
